Original American Salem cigarettes attract attention with unusual green packaging, hinting at the original menthol flavor of the product. Remaining quite strong, tobacco at the same time demonstrates softness. This gives Salem cigarettes an amazing taste. Raw materials are grown in the traditional region – North Carolina.
Salem cigarettes are expressed in the Queen size format and are distinguished by a moderate strength of 0.5 mg of nicotine. Salem cigarettes are considered rather ladies’, but due to the advantageous diameter of cigarettes, men often smoke them too. The taste of Salem cigarettes is velvety with light notes of freshness from menthol. They stretch easily, but do not smolder quickly, like cheap counterparts. There is no sharp tobacco aftertaste, more menthol remains. The color of tobacco is natural. The fact indicates the absence of chemicals.
According to marketing legend, Salem cigarettes appeared thanks to one of the directors of the R.J.R Tobacco Company, Edward Darr. Allegedly while vacationing in Switzerland, he encountered filtered cigarettes, which were gaining popularity in Europe. Inspired by new trends, he returned to the States and convened a council of experts R.J.R. A new brand of cigarettes was introduced in 1954 and quickly became one of the best-selling cigarette brands.
Simultaneously with the filter in the new cigarettes, a special tobacco mixture was also used, which quickly became known as the “American mix”. The main difference of this from all the others was the presence in its composition of the tobacco variety “Barley”. In addition, it was not just dried, but thermally processed in a special way to obtain a light caramel flavor (in the language of tobacco professionals, this process is called toasting). As a result of all these innovations, cigarettes were born, which were named after the city that became the cradle of the company. This is how American smokers got to know the Salem cigarettes.
The first advertising slogan of the campaign to promote the new brand was: “Winston tastes good like a cigarette should”. However, this phrase contains a clear grammatical error. It is difficult to say now whether this was an accidental mistake or a well-thought-out publicity stunt, but public attention was drawn to the brand instantly.
