One of the most famous tobacco manufacturers in the entire United States of America could not but please all its connoisseurs with excellent Newport cigarettes with menthol flavor. These American cigarettes have a pack that is pleasant to look and feel to the touch, a wonderful velvety taste and a pleasant aroma of both menthol and real tobacco leaves.
Many people remember Newport cigarettes from the early 1990s. They were sold, but they were not in such mass demand as, for example, some other menthol brands. More often people took Salem. Although, to be honest, it seemed to me that it was Newport that had the optimal ratio of menthol to tobacco. Salem was too vigorous, and Newport had a balanced taste, where the menthol was not intrusive, but only softened and cooled the classic American mix.
We have some very interesting facts about these Newport cigarettes.
Lorillard gives out free cigarettes to children. A lawsuit against the Lorillard Tobacco Company alleged that in the late 1960s, the company’s vans were used for regular trips to residences where children were given free Newport cigarettes. Evidence showed that the deceased plaintiff died of lung cancer but began smoking at the age of nine after receiving free Newport cigarettes near a black playground in Boston. The Massachusetts Superior Court of Justice upheld $35 million in damages against the Lorillard Tobacco Company, while setting aside other damages issues.
Newport and the attack on African Americans. In the 1960s, Lorillard specifically targeted African Americans to sell Newport cigarettes. Lorillard increased its budget in the African American market by 87% over 1968 due to increased efforts to market its Newport menthol cigarette to the African American market. Government polls in 2011 showed that menthol cigarettes accounted for 30% of the overall market, with over 80% of black smokers preferring menthol compared to 22% of non-Hispanic white smokers. In 2016, Newport was reported to be the preferred brand by almost 60% of black smokers.
